Flipping Precalculus: Engaging First Year Students

When teaching Precalculus/College Algebra to (mostly) college freshman, we are looking for a way to increase success. With approximately 50% of all students failing this course nationwide, finding a method to support and improve success here will increase the number of STEM majors across the country. We flip our classroom by having the students do reading outside of class, followed by an online quiz about the reading material. We then start class with a mini-lecture to clarify common misconceptions. This is followed by group work to address those concepts and have students draw their own conclusions about more difficult problems.

Jacqueline Jensen-Vallin earned her PhD in low-dimensional topology from the University of Oregon in 2002. She has been a faculty member at Sam Houston State University (SHSU) and Slippery Rock University (SRU), and is now at Lamar University in Beaumont, TX.
